(It's usually a big "A") ----------------------------------------------------------- June 12, 2006 - In patients with weak left heart function but no CHF symptoms, using the endothelin blocker enrasentan may actually worsen the heart. Researchers compared enrasentan to the ACE inhibitor enalapril (Vasotec) in 72 patients with left heart dysfunction but no symptoms. Enrasentan patients had heart size increase, while enalapril patients had heart size go down. Both groups improved BNP level, but the improvement was more in the enalapril patients. So even though high endothelin levels in CHFers cause bad effects, at least this one endothelin blocker does not help at all to slow down CHF onset in patients with weakened hearts. Go figure.
