ENABLE (Endothelin Antagonist Bosentan for Lowering Cardiac Events in Heart Failure) studied low-dose bosentan, a non-selective endothelin receptor blocker. Patients were class 3 to class 4 CHFers with EF under 35%. A total of 1613 patients took either bosentan at 125mg twice a day or placebo. Early results were presented at the 2002 Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology. 321 of 808 placebo patients and 312 of 805 bosentan patients died or were hospitalized for heart failure during the trial. Taking bosentan raised the risk of worsening CHF due to retaining fluid. Source: Int J Cardiol. 2002 Oct;85(2-3):195-7.
