Safely Getting Dumbbells Into Position

How do you get dumbbells into position for dumbbell bench press or dumbbell flyes? Here is the right way.

Pick up a dumbbell in each hand. Carefully straddle your weight bench.

As you slowly sit down on the bench, move the dumbbells so the flat surface of the outside plate on the end closest to your little finger rests on your thighs.

As you lean back to lie down on the bench, let your thighs push the dumbbells into position. Your arms stay bent. Your legs also stay bent and "follow" you back as you lie down. Just use your hands to steady the dumbbells.

Now move the dumbbells with your arms and hands the small distance needed to start the movement. Move your feet onto the floor and you're ready to go.

To get back up, keep the dumbbells tight to your chest and slightly to the sides. "Roll up" until the weights once again rest on your thighs, then carefully stand up.
