I am 14 years old and I recently found out that I have Rheumatic Heart Disease. I have been going to the doctor since the end of October, 2003, when my sister and I were both treated by the same doctor. I was treated for a sinus infection and my little sister was treated for strep throat.
A few weeks later I was back at the doctor for joint pain. I went back and forth to the doctor until my primary care doctor sent me to Duke. I went for arthritis and they did some blood work and found out that I had a strep infection at some time.
I came back for a follow-up in March and that's when they heard a heart murmur that wasn't there in December. They admitted me to the hospital and told my father, mother, and I that I would eventually have to get my mitral and aortic valves replaced.
